1. About these terms
These terms apply to everyone taking part in a 50 Million Voices (50MV) Practice Interview event. When you tick "I accept" on the sign-up form, you are agreeing to them.
50 Million Voices is a registered charity in England and Wales, charity number 1189541. In these terms, "we", "us" and "our" mean 50 Million Voices; "you" means the person signing up.
These terms are not a contract of employment and do not create an employment relationship. If you are volunteering with us in an ongoing role, a separate Volunteer Agreement will also apply.
2. What the programme is – and isn't
The Practice Interview Programme gives people who stutter a supportive environment to practise real-life interviews and receive feedback, and Interviewers gain experience on the other side of the table. Sessions take place online, and participants come from many different countries and backgrounds.
The programme is not:
- a real job interview, or intended as a route to a job with any organisation;
- speech and language therapy, counselling, or any form of clinical treatment;
- professional careers advice, recruitment advice, medical advice or legal advice;
- an assessment, qualification or accreditation of any kind.
Feedback from interviewers is offered in good faith and reflects that individual's view and experience. It is general guidance only.
3. Who can take part
You must be 18 or over to sign up.
You will need reliable internet access and a device that can run video calls. Sessions run on Zoom or similar platforms. Please hold your sessions on one of these platforms and at the times arranged, so that our safety measures – waiting rooms, password access and privacy settings – apply to your session.
Places are limited and we may need to close registration or reallocate places at our discretion.
4. What we will do
We will do our best to:
- Brief you properly. Everyone is required to attend a briefing session as part of the event, so you know what to expect and what's expected of you.
- Match you with an interviewer/interviewee and give you what you need to arrange your session at a time that suits you both.
- Keep the environment safe. Via privacy settings, waiting rooms and password access on the meetings we host, and we act on concerns that are reported to us.
- Give you a named point of contact for questions, support and feedback throughout the event.
- Handle your information carefully, in line with our Privacy Notice and Safeguarding Policy.
5. What we ask of you
By taking part, you agree to:
- Follow the briefing. The briefing sets out a framework for successful interviewing either as an interviewer or an interviewee. Please follow it.
- Be constructive. Feedback between interviewers and interviewees should be supportive, specific and in line with our approach. This is a space for people to build confidence.
- Be inclusive and respectful towards everyone you meet through the programme, in line with our Code of Conduct.
- Keep professional boundaries. Do not act as a therapist, coach or adviser to your interview partner, and do not use a session to promote a business or service.
- Turn up. Attend the sessions you've arranged, and give as much notice as you can if you can't make it, so we can make alternative arrangements.
- Delete what you download. Any files you receive for a session – a CV, notes, a spreadsheet of participants – must be permanently deleted from your devices once the session is complete, unless we've agreed otherwise with you.
- Secure your device. Any personal device you use for the programme should ideally be locked with a PIN, password or biometric lock and have up-to-date security software.
- Report concerns promptly using the routes in section 10.
6. Confidentiality
What happens in a practice interview stays in the practice interview.
You agree to treat other participants' contributions as confidential. You must not share another participant's personal details, career situation, disclosures, stutter, or how they performed with anyone outside 50MV, unless they have explicitly agreed or unless you are raising a safeguarding concern through the routes in section 10.
Some participants choose to disclose that they stutter, or share information about their health or disability. We treat this as special category data and handle it confidentially, on a need-to-know basis. Please do the same.
You must never use information you encounter through the programme – including email addresses, CVs and disability disclosures – for personal, commercial or recruitment purposes.
Feedback shared through our formal feedback sessions and evaluation forms is used to improve the programme.
7. Recording
We do not recommend recording practice interviews. If a session is going to be recorded, everyone in it must give written or recorded consent beforehand, and the recording must be deleted once it has served its purpose.
You must not record, screenshot or photograph a session without the other participant's consent, and you must not share any recording outside the session.
We will not publish images or clips of an individual on our website or social media without their consent.
8. Contact after the event
Participants are welcome to stay in touch after the event – professionally, or as a mentoring relationship – if you both agree to it. Please be aware that any ongoing relationship of this kind falls outside the scope of 50MV, these terms and our safeguarding arrangements. We are not able to supervise or take responsibility for it.
9. Your personal information
We collect and use your personal information to run the programme, match you with an interviewer or interviewee, and evaluate how it went. Full details of what we collect, why, how long we keep it and your rights under UK GDPR are in our Privacy Notice.
Where we ask for information about your stutter, health or disability, we ask for it on a need-to-know basis and we ask for your consent on the sign-up form. You can withdraw that consent at any time by contacting us.
10. Safeguarding and raising a concern
Our interview sessions are a safe space for participants. If something happens that worries you – during a session or around it – please tell us.
If someone is in immediate danger, or a crime is in progress, contact the emergency services in your country first. Then let us know.
To report a concern to us, contact our Lead Trustee for Safeguarding: Chris Gemmell.
If you'd rather not go through the Lead Trustee, or your concern is about a trustee or member of our core team, contact our independent safeguarding lead: Gina Waggott.
If your interviewee becomes distressed, or discloses significant mental health difficulties during a session, please don't try to act as a therapist. Stay within the boundaries of the session, point them towards appropriate professional support, and report it to us promptly using the contacts above.
Our full Safeguarding Policy explains how we handle concerns, including our record-keeping and our reporting obligations to the Charity Commission.
11. Complaints
If you're unhappy with any part of the programme, please raise it first, informally, with your named point of contact for the event. Most things are resolved quickly this way.
If it isn't resolved, you can write to the Chair of Trustees at chair@50millionvoices.org.
12. Ending your participation
You can withdraw from the programme at any time, but please be aware that if you need to drop out of the program, this has the negative impact of leaving your interviewee without an interviewer, or vice versa. In the unlikely event that you do need to withdraw, please tell us as soon as possible, so we have time to try to accommodate changes.
We may end your participation immediately if you breach these terms, particularly where there is a breach of confidentiality, a safeguarding concern, or behaviour that is abusive, discriminatory or otherwise incompatible with our Code of Conduct. Where we can, we will explain why.
13. Disclaimer and liability
The advice and material provided by or on behalf of 50 Million Voices, or during any 50 Million Voices events, including any feedback from interviewers, is for general guidance only and is not a substitute for appropriate professional, medical or legal advice.
Individual circumstances vary and outcomes cannot be guaranteed. 50 Million Voices makes no representations or warranties regarding the accuracy, completeness or suitability of any information shared and to the extent permitted by law disclaims all liability for actions taken or not taken based on the same.
By participating, you agree that you do so at your own risk. You agree to treat others' contributions as confidential. Views expressed are those of individual participants and not necessarily those of 50 Million Voices. References to third-party services or links do not constitute endorsement.
14. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. The version and effective date at the top of this page always show the current version. If we make a significant change while an event is running, we'll tell registered participants by email.
15. Governing law
These terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales, and any disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
Thank you for taking part
Practice interviews are about building confidence, learning through experience, and helping more people share their skills and ambitions.
By taking part thoughtfully and respectfully, you are helping to create a positive experience for everyone involved. We hope you enjoy the conversation and learn something new, no matter which side of the table you are on.
We're glad to have you with us!
